Why We Use Gentle Leaders
At Wildly Urban Training, our priority is safety, dignity, and quality of life—for both dogs and the people who love them. Because we work extensively within a retirement and senior living community, many of our clients are elderly, have limited strength, balance concerns, or mobility challenges. For these guardians, safe leash handling is not optional—it is essential.
A Gentle Leader® (head halter) is one of the tools we may thoughtfully incorporate as part of a cooperative, positive reinforcement training plan.
Safety Comes First
Even a friendly, well-meaning dog or a smaller, lighter canine can unintentionally cause harm if they pull suddenly. For older or frail handlers, this can result in:
Falls
Shoulder or wrist injuries
Loss of confidence walking their dog
The Gentle Leader allows us to:
Reduce pulling without force
Improve control using minimal physical effort
Keep both dog and handler safe during walks
This makes it possible for seniors to continue enjoying walks with their dogs—rather than giving them up due to safety concerns.
Used Humanely and With Training
We do not use the Gentle Leader as a quick fix or correction tool.
Instead:
Dogs are slowly and positively conditioned to the equipment
The dog is never forced into the head halter
Reinforcement is used to build comfort and understanding
The goal is calm, cooperative walking—not restraint
When introduced correctly, most dogs adjust quickly and move comfortably, without fear or stress.
A Temporary Support, Not a Crutch
The Gentle Leader is a management and safety tool, not a replacement for training.
While using it, we actively teach:
Loose-leash walking skills
Focus and engagement
Calm responses to distractions
As skills improve and safety allows, some teams may transition to other equipment. Others may continue using a Gentle Leader long-term—and that is perfectly valid. The right tool is the one that keeps everyone safe and successful.
Aligned With Cooperative Training Values
In cooperative, positive reinforcement training:
Tools should support learning, not suppress behavior
Dogs should not fear equipment or handling
Human safety matters just as much as canine comfort
When used correctly, a Gentle Leader:
Prevents the need for force or corrections
Reduces frustration for both dog and handler
Supports clear communication without pain or intimidation
Our Commitment
At Wildly Urban Training, every tool choice is:
Individualized
Evidence-informed
Humane
Chosen with the whole household in mind
Our goal is not just good walking—it’s safe, confident companionship that allows dogs and their people to stay together and enjoy life.
